I did not grow up as a Reds’ fan. In fact, Cincinnati’s great Big Red Machine caused me great heartache when, as a 12-year old boy growing up in Northern Virginia, I watched on TV as my favorite team, the Red Sox, lost to Sparky Anderson’s crew, 4-3, in Game 7 of the 1975 Fall Classic. I had been ecstatic after Carlton Fisk’s 12th inning game-winning home run had given the ‘Sox a 7-6 win in Game 6. But following the Game 7 loss, in which my favorite player, the great Carl Yastrzemski, flew out to end the game in the bottom of the ninth inning at Fenway Park, I was in tears – a broken kid.

First elected in 2002, Robert F. Lederer, the five-term mayor of Fairfax City, announced in December that he will not run for another two-year term, and will retire in June. R. Scott Silverthorne, a current city councilman and Gerald T. "Jerry" O’Dell are vying for the seat. The Connection contacted O’Dell repeatedly, through email and phone, and he did not respond to questions. Here are Silverthorne’s responses:
Celebrating Japanese Art And Culture at the Workhouse Arts Center
The Workhouse Arts Center will present Japanese Art and Culture Day at the Workhouse, Celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the Gift of Trees, National Cherry Blossom Festival. On Saturday, April 21 from 11:30 a.m. – 4 p.m., visitors to the Workhouse Arts Center will find an array of interesting, educational, entertaining, and free activities celebrating the art and culture, both ancient and modern, of Japan. A ceremonial planting of cherry trees will kick-off the event at 11:30 a.m. The trees have been provided by the Merrifield Garden Center.
