Jovany Martinez is the 29-year-old Hispanic man who died after being shot by a Fairfax County Sheriff’s deputy Monday night Aug. 15 outside Inova Fairfax Hospital.

Shopping With the Sheriff

The Fairfax County Sheriff’s Department teamed up with 39 children during the Shop with the Sheriff event on Thursday, Aug. 25. With adroit storytelling based upon unexpected real events, seven skilled storytellers enchanted patrons with theatrical accounts full of charm and wonder. The evening was called “You Choose the Adventure.”
‘ReelAbilities’ Film Festival Arriving

A unique film festival dedicated to representing the lives, stories, and artistic expressions of people with disabilities is opening soon in Northern Virginia. It is the annual “ReelAbilities.” National in scope, the Jewish Community Center of Northern Virginia (JCCNV is) partnering with local Northern Virginia organizations to produce the week-long event.

Well, they're finally over! Suffering through the breathless NBC "coverage" of Olympic "sports," many of which few of us have ever heard of, involving Zika-virus and Rio-mugging avoidance tips, inane commentary, and tedious "up-close and personals" punctuated by the occasional showing of an actual event and immediate post-race interviews with "heroes" gasping for breath, I wondered about the origins of the ridiculous habit of winning athletes appearing to take a bite out of their medal before the cameras.

As school begins, we are accustomed to safety warnings. Slow down driving, watch for students along the roads, near schools and perhaps behaving unpredictably near intersections. Buckle seat belts. Wear bicycle helmets. Avoid distracted driving.
